As we come again to Christmas, and once again remember the first Advent of Christ Jesus, the moment in His creation when He chose to first manifest Himself on earth, it seems timely to remind ourselves of the call to watch for the second Advent, when He comes again. This second time will not be like the first.
He revealed Himself first as a babe, to remind us of the humility of Holiness, that He fully understands all our weaknesses, and would redeem all aspects of our life. He returned to heaven as the triumphant Saviour, defeating death and sin. So now, we wait for His return as the victorious King of kings, knowing everything has been placed under His feet. Everything.
So let us watch and wait patiently, for He is coming again, more surely than the breaths we breathe, or than the earth on which we stand. But, He must fulfil all truth, and give time for the fullness of grace, so that those who would receive mercy, do.
Watch, as He asks, “Do you see what I see?”
‘I will stand my watch and set myself on the rampart, and watch to see what He will say to me, and what I will answer when I am corrected.
Then the LORD answered me and said:
“Write the vision and make it plain on tablets, that he may run who reads it. For the vision is yet for an appointed time; But at the end it will speak, and it will not lie. Though it tarries, wait for it; Because it will surely come, it will not tarry. Behold the proud, his soul is not upright in him; But the just shall live by his faith.’ (Habakkuk 2:1-4)
The words of Jesus
‘“Watch therefore, for you do not know what hour your Lord is coming. But know this, that if the master of the house had known what hour the thief would come, he would have watched and not allowed his house to be broken into. Therefore you also be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.”’ (Matthew 24:42-44)
‘Now when He [Jesus] had spoken these things, while they watched, He was taken up, and a cloud received Him out of their sight. And while they looked steadfastly toward heaven as He went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel, who also said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will so come in like manner as you saw Him go into heaven.”’ (Acts 1:9-11)
