The love that overcomes

‘To love and obey’, old words perhaps not used as much in marriage vows now, but their meaning is much deeper than first thought. Shaped by the words of God, they reflected a devotion born not out of blind obedience, but love. A love whose source is divine. This love overcomes fear, and stands in strong contrast to that which we see so often today. It pulls down hate, and lifts up hope in each other. Even when help seems hidden or distance, this love knows it will come.

But such love can only truly be cultivated by being in relationship with its Author.

‘There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love. We love Him because He first loved us.

If someone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen, how can he love God whom he has not seen? And this commandment we have from Him: that he who loves God must love his brother also.

Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves Him who begot also loves him who is begotten of Him. By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and keep His commandments. For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome. For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith. Who is he who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?

The royal search is ours

It is the glory of God to conceal a matter,

But the glory of kings is to search out a matter.

(Proverbs 25:2)

And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart.

(Jeremiah 29:13)

“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.

True love

In the end, love is perfectly defined, and is as simple as He is complex. While there are many faces to it like a multi-faceted diamond, it’s whole is fully found in only one source. For us to fully express true love, our hearts and whole being, must be full of this love. Yes it is a heart thing, but so much more.

Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. He who does not love does not know God, for God is love. In this the love of God was manifested toward us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him.

This is love…

Love, a word so full of meaning and emotion, and yet so often re-interpreted for ones’ own benefit. The pursuit of true love is perhaps our highest calling.

This is love, that we walk according to His commandments. This is the commandment, that as you have heard from the beginning, you should walk in it.

For many deceivers have gone out into the world who do not confess Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist. Look to yourselves, that we do not lose those things we worked for, but that we may receive a full reward.

Whoever transgresses and does not abide in the doctrine of Christ does not have God. He who abides in the doctrine of Christ has both the Father and the Son.

The overflow

It is so good to see the bees abounding in our garden. While it is still winter, our balmy days make it feel like spring. The wonderful bee, this diligent worker, who by the time she is fifteen days old, gets to live it’s last week as a labourer in the fields, knowing the harvest is not theirs, but they get to share in its goodness. Ever so focussed, these workers not only harvest, but by Divine design, also sow seeds of fruitfulness as they fly from one flower to another, cross pollinating as they go.

“Behold, the days are coming,” says the Lord,

“When the plowman shall overtake the reaper,

And the treader of grapes him who sows seed;

The mountains shall drip with sweet wine,

And all the hills shall flow with it.

(Amos 9:13)

Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, and to finish His work. Do you not say, ‘There are still four months and then comes the harvest’? Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and look at the fields, for they are already white for harvest! And he who reaps receives wages, and gathers fruit for eternal life, that both he who sows and he who reaps may rejoice together. For in this the saying is true: One sows and another reaps.’ I sent you to reap that for which you have not labored; others have labored, and you have entered into their labors.”

(John 4:34-38)

Then He said to them, “The harvest truly is great, but the laborers are few; therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest. Go your way; behold, I send you out as lambs among wolves.

(Luke 10:2-3)

Who then is Paul, and who is Apollos, but ministers through whom you believed, as the Lord gave to each one? I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the increase. So then neither he who plants is anything, nor he who waters, but God who gives the increase. Now he who plants and he who waters are one, and each one will receive his own reward according to his own labor.

For we are God’s fellow workers; you are God’s field, you are God’s building.

(1 Corinthians 3:5-9)

Beauty concealed

That which is wrought in the hidden place of God is the most beautiful, a faith and heart precious to Him. And at His time He will choose to reveal such beauty, and yet Christ is a jealous lover and would sooner keep us, His crafted beauty, for Himself. And yet our Lord will reveal such treasures at the appointed times for He would wish all creation would know of His love.

My frame was not hidden from You, When I was made in secret, And skillfully wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed. And in Your book they all were written, The days fashioned for me, When as yet there were none of them.

(Psalms 139:15-16)

For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellence of the power may be of God and not of us. We are hard-pressed on every side, yet not crushed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed— always carrying about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our body.

  • (2 Corinthians 4:6-10)
  • Do not let your adornment be merely outward—arranging the hair, wearing gold, or putting on fine apparel— rather let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the incorruptible beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in the sight of God.

    (1 Peter 3:3-4)

Shine brighter..for the darkness cannot resist the light

At a time when the darkness becomes darker, what is our response? To shine brighter the light of Christ.

So we go deeper in to Him, becoming evermore His humble servants and friends, knowing as we die to self, the Lord’s brightness, with love and truth, shines forth from us with increasing intensity.

In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.

    (John 1:4-5)

    Arise, shine; For your light has come! And the glory of the Lord is risen upon you. For behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, And deep darkness the people;

But the Lord will arise over you, And His glory will be seen upon you. The Gentiles shall come to your light, And kings to the brightness of your rising.

    (Isaiah 60:1-3)

Now when Jesus heard that John had been put in prison, He departed to Galilee. And leaving Nazareth, He came and dwelt in Capernaum, which is by the sea, in the regions of Zebulun and Naphtali, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying:

“The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali,

By the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan,

    Galilee of the Gentiles:

The people who sat in darkness have seen a great light,

And upon those who sat in the region and shadow of death

    Light has dawned.”

From that time Jesus began to preach and to say, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”

    (Matthew 4:12-17)
