Let mercy triumph

Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus, (1 Timothy 2:1-5)

It would appear that the US House Speaker, Nancy Pelosi, and others, have great hatred for President Trump, as evidenced by many on the news media channels. Then there are many who are seeking justice for the wrong they see has been done by him, particularly recently regarding the apparent galvanising of the many who the attacked the US Capitol. Others support the work that has been done through President Trump’s term. However, for the sake of the United States of America, and for a hopeful peace, we beseech the Lord that wise heads would prevail in the US Congress and the Senate, that they consider carefully their next steps, and let them not run with haste to impeach this man.

Hatred for a man cannot override duty to a nation. Bringing on the impeachment has only caused the divisions to grow deeper between those who support Trump and his cause, and the many who do not. In addition, the political and media reaction to the riots on the 6th of January, and the labelling all with the same brush, is likely to have, sadly, furthered their hatred for government. May the Lord’s healing grace come for the hurting soul of the USA, and mothers and fathers in the faith arise to usher in a new move of grace.

There is a strong sense that if successful this impeachment will likely descend the nation into civil war, or at the very least create a deep hatred that will not be healed by Nancy Pelosi, President Biden, their colleagues, and many others for years to come, and severely weaken the nation and its democracy. Maybe it is time for mercy for the nation to arise over justice to a man?

Here in Australia, we have no real appreciation for the distrust many of the citizens have for their government, however we know it is effectively the reason for the Second Amendment. Trump was wrong to stir up such emotion, and it is easy to see how it can be said to have incited violence. Those who carried out this crime against the nations government are to be held to account. But this act of impeachment will likely do the same thing that they accuse President Trump of doing, inciting violence, and hatred.

So, Lord God we pray,

You say ‘mercy triumphs over justice’, and call us to forgive, and not dwell in hatred. Help the United States Senate in adopting these two truths to find a better solution for the care and future of the USA. You know the truth and the price Trump is paying for his ways, help them to see what greater pressure they will place on an already fragile nation by persecuting him and his followers. Open their understanding, showing them the effects of attempting to push one underground. Let not political convenience, hatred, or emotion rule now. You care for justice, and as Judge you will bring it too past. And yet, for the sake of Your wonderful nation help that nation’s leaders consider mercy first…mercy for the United States of America. Grant them Your wisdom for this moment in the nation’s history. Let Your mercy prevail. In Jesus name we pray, Amen.
