Just thought I would follow share a little about the blessing of knowing that those who believe in Christ, are seated in heavenly places, and that this is both something that pertains to our eternal destiny, but also exists now in terms of our spirits in Christ.
As you would know when we believe in Christ, as Lord and Saviour, we are born again of the Spirit (John 3:5,6), and we become one with Him by His Spirit. And thus we become a new creation (2 Cor. 5:16,17). While our body may have stayed the same, our soul is saved, and spirit comes alive as it becomes one with the Holy Spirit.
In so doing Christ dwell in us, and we in Him, by the Spirit of God. It is no longer our spirit that is in us, but our new spirit in Christ that abides in us. (See John 14:18-20,23; Gal. 2:20; Eph. 3:17; Col. 1:27). It still staggers me to know that the God of all creation dwells in us, and we in Him.
For through Him we both have access by one Spirit to the Father. (Ephesians 2:18)
As we are now born of the Spirit of God, and the same one Spirit is found in all believers, so by the Spirit (1 Cor. 12:13; Eph. 2:18; 4:4) we can dwell in unity (of course). However, the other amazing things is that as we are found in Christ, and He is now seated in heavenly places (Eph. 1:20) before, during, and after the resurrection, so we too are seated in heavenly places when we believe in Him as we are found in Him by the Spirit.
The Bible speaks to this present reality so well in the following verses.
even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, (Ephesians 2:5-6)
Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him, (Romans 6:8)
But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, to an innumerable company of angels, (Hebrews 12:22)
And so while our body and soul may still be here on earth until we die, our spirit man is both with us and in heaven due to it being one with the Spirit of God. Even with Christ in heaven. A rather big concept to get your head around. When we die our soul joins our spirit in heaven, and in time we will gain a new body (e.g. 1 Cor. 15:35-49), something similar to the resurrected body of Christ.
Thus we are called ambassadors of Christ, and the kingdom of God, as our home country is really heaven and the kingdom of God, and it is why the yearning to go home is so real (e.g. Phil 1; 2 Cor. 5:2-6), as well as because of the knowledge of the blessings of being in heaven. And yet we are first called to serve God on earth, as we must for our allotted season.
One of the awesome things about all this is that while we may mourn those loved one we know who have died and gone to heaven, the truth is that our spirit and their’s are together in heaven. Sure those of us on earth may not have a clear knowledge/understanding (and memory) of this as our souls (mind, will, and emotions) are, to some extent, still here on earth, but in our spirits we are together. The ‘spiritual’ connections we feel with those we know on earth, the shared inspiration, understand, discernment about others, and connection we have, that does not go. Sure in heaven men and women are not given to marriage (Mark 12:25,26), but are more like angels, but I believe the connection we make in God through marriage on earth also means there is a special relationship between husband and wife in the heavenly places, after all God says we become one in the joining together of marriage.
So while we may be waiting to join with our loved ones who are already in heaven, they are not that far from us, and are more aware of this connection than we are here on earth. Remembering that the Bible also refers to meeting in the council of God (Jer. 23:18:22), and boldly coming in the throne room of God (Heb. 4:16; 10:19,22), and today this is what our spirits can do, and it is one of the reasons why when people gather together in a special time of prayer and worship they can often feel like they have all joined God in His manifest presence. Which is also due to the fact that we worship God in spirit and truth, and He inhabits the praises of His people.
Anyway, should stop. I am droning on now, but there is much more to say about all this. Apologies for coming across all teachy, telling you things you already know. Praying this is a blessing to you all. While all Christians are together in Christ, a husband and wife are also one on earth by body and soul, and there is also a deep spiritual connection. Thus there is also a mysterious (Eph. 5:30-32) connection we have now in heaven through Christ, that becomes more real for us when we pass through the thin veil of this life on earth in to the fullness of our eternal promise in heaven.
