As we witness the effect of the Coronavirus COVID-19 on the nations it is challenging to see the church shudder to a stop, and effectively mirror the world in fear. After all the mission of Christ is to go out, meet in homes, taverns, etc, as well as in the temple, and lay hands on the sick, and share the good news….and not shrink back from them.
BUT, could it be that in His sovereignty God is using this response to COVID-19 to cause the churches to stop all their programs, to come aside to Him, and wait for His fresh out pouring..and then go out in the power and compassion of Christ (like the early disciple, Wesley, Lake and Knox)? For many a year there has been a strong sense of the call to come up to the upper room to wait on Him, for the baptism of fire has to come. But for many reasons most kept just doing their own good works, rather than laying them all down and seeking His face…in unity.
Now the Lord presents us an opportunity to come to the cleft of the rock, His secret place, to hear His voice, and wait..so we can once again be the sent ones (in power), and not those who call people to come to us and not the Lord. Now we must choose to seek His face, and wrestle for His presence.
Rise up, my love, my fair one, and come away! “O my dove, in the clefts of the rock, in the secret places of the cliff, let me see your face, let me hear your voice; For your voice is sweet, and your face is lovely.” (Song of Songs 2:13b-14)
So let us gather in homes, ask for the Lord’s anointing for unity, for waiting, and seeking His face. May the Spirit fill our hearts afresh with love for God and our neighbour, and the power of God. As He moves, then let us move, even in new ways, but first let us wait until His fresh baptism of the Holy Spirit and Fire comes.
The Lord has spoken of this year being one of great confluence, and one where the courts of heaven are seated and their judgements passed down. Now we see many idols falling (e.g. sports, money, entertainment, the works of man), and global ambitions curtailed), but from this a great river can flow as we come together and follow the Lord Jesus Christ.
Wave after wave the storm will come, in sets the waves will come, but we are those who run to the waves, positioning ourselves, and riding them for His glory. Fearing not for our Lord Jesus Christ is with us, and never forsakes us.
