God bless all those who have a heart to see the nation’s leaders draw nearer to God, and for them to walk in the image of Christ. A double blessing on all for writing to President Trump, Vice President Pence, and all Presidential candidates (such as Biden and Harris) encouraging them to follow God’s way, in obedience to His word. The warnings of past President’s Washington and Lincoln about walking away from the Lord are still very applicable today. It is certainly the desire of God that we all become like Him, and that for our leaders to walk in the fear of the Lord, and to journey with Him in their own personal walk, and to practice all the fruits of the Spirit. We need to be very conscious of the Word of God’s command to pray, intercede, and give thanks for our leaders.
‘Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth‘.
1 Timothy 2:1-4
It is perhaps this that forms our personal prayer and desire for our leader. In a time (particularly in the western world) where nations are sliding quickly away from their Godly roots, and even persecuting Christians for preaching, teaching, or simply talking about Biblical truths, leaders that defend and support the right for this are certainly fulfilling this command, for only when God’s truth is preached and taught can ‘men be saved and come to the knowledge of truth‘. This is a Biblical priority. We also need our leaders to defend justice and righteousness (the very foundations of God’s throne), execute wrath on him who practices evil, seek true Godly justice in the courts, to cherish all life (from the unborn to the very old, able and disabled…precious gifts from God), and support prayer and open acknowledgement of God (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) in the halls of powers, and in the streets.
Righteousness and justice are the foundation of Your throne; Mercy and truth go before Your face.(Psalm 89:14)
Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people. (Proverbs 14:34)
As what people do is often more a true reflection of their heart than what they say, this would seem to reveal President Trump is on a journey with God, but, like us all, has an ongoing walk of sanctification in front of him. Rising to fatherhood for a nation is a noble and high call, and he needs prayer and support for that calling. Only the good Lord really knows what is in his heart, and the media do not always help us with that challenge! It is certainly refreshing to see a leader of a great nation like the USA acknowledge God so openly. It would be nice to see that happen more here in Australia, and in other nations, although it is good to see our Prime Minister is also a Christian.
What we do believe is that President Trump has been placed by God in to this role as President of the USA, and while perhaps appearing to be a rather blunt instrument at times, he was what was apparently needed to arrest the general slide of that nation in to a type of secular and religious malaise of beliefs based on compromise, and to smash through the overt one-world man-based systems that were gradually taking control across the globe. His nature also seems to have very much clarified where people stand on matters. How he handles that opportunity he will need to stand before the Lord and defend, as to us in how we make use of the global opportunity God has provided us, through the actions of Trump (and leaders like the UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, maybe our PM Scott Morrison, and others), to reflect on our nation’s values and to turn back from this slide away from the Lord. This work is not yet complete, and so too the Lord will need those who continue to pursue righteousness and justice in the nation.
For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to evil. Do you want to be unafraid of the authority? Do what is good, and you will have praise from the same. For he is God’s minister to you for good. But if you do evil, be afraid; for he does not bear the sword in vain; for he is God’s minister, an avenger to execute wrath on him who practices evil.
Romans 13:3,4
The Lord reveals that the defence of the USA, and its allies, will become an even more important issue soon (as if it was not already a great concern), and thus we need those leaders who carry the wisdom, authority, and sword of the Lord to defend the lands from the wicked (including evil nations). We should be of no doubt, there is the rumblings of war on the horizon, only in the Lord can true peace reign.
Of course there are many other areas we need our nation’s leaders to action, such as leading with justice and righteousness, defending freedom, serving the needs of all (including the poor, widow, and orphan), seeking peace, finding unity where possible, dealing with the impacts of pandemics, countering the culture of fear, and addressing other pressing social and economic matters. You are no doubt much better positioned to understand how President Trump and others fare in those fronts than ourselves. May the good Lord lead you in your understanding and your decisions regarding voting, and above all pray for all of them regardless of your decision.
Our heart breaks for the disunity in the US, and yet we know true unity can only come in Christ by His Spirit, and that while unsanctified man and evil forces exist so will division. Part of the key is how the body of Christ can model unity despite their differences. Clearly more needs to be done to address the sad treatment of black and Hispanic people in parts of the US, and for healing and forgiveness to somehow come in order for the USA to rise up to its fuller identity in God. True unity and healing only come in Christ, and by His Spirit.
Finally, the exhortation of God found in Micah very much applies to both our nation’s leaders, and in fact us.
He has shown you, O man, what is good; And what does the Lord require of you but to do justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?
Micah 6:8
The USA is often in our prayers, thanks to God, and we certainly pray that the good Lord continues to protect and prosper this nation, the Office of the President of the USA (and the Government), and that the Lord heal the sick and broken hearted, bring unity and equality, defend freedom, salvation/revival, and renewed vision for the road ahead. These are rough days, and we need God more than ever.
May God bless America, you and your families.
